History of the Boston Red Sox
The history of the Boston Red Sox is rich with lore. The are the reigning 2007 World Series Champions and this came after a very long dry spell with no World Series wins. The Boston Red Sox are one of the oldest teams in the league and have made their team home since 1912 at Fenway Park, sometimes called “The Fens”.
This history of the Boston Red Sox name comes from the uniform feature of red around the sock area of the uniform. No matter which uniform the team is wearing, home or away or an alternate - the sock area is always red.
The Boston Red Sox club was actually formed in 1901, they were the team to beat and beat they did of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903. They went on to win four more championships by 1918, and then went into one of the longest periods without a win in baseball history. Many people attributed their inability to win to the “Curse of the Bambino” that was said to have been caused by the trade of Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1920. That curse was reversed in 2004, when the Boston Red Sox finally won and brought home their sixth World
Series Championship.
The late 1920’s to early 1930’s were not a good time for the Boston Red Sox, who managed to average over 100 loses in a season. In 1933, the luck of the team began looking up when Tom Yawkey bought the Red Sox and acquired some strong players. These wise player additions paid off and the Red Sox were again strong competitors in the League.
For the next 30 years, the Boston Red Sox would continue their pursuit of the World Series win just falling short. Ted Williams, considered one of the greatest hitters of all time lent his talents to the time and some people started calling the team “The TedSox”. Ted went on to write a book, “The Science of Hitting” that is still used to present day by up and coming baseball players.
The 1960’s didn’t start well for the Boston Red Sox, however 1967 brought a furious and exciting pennant race. The 1970’s brought a new uniform look when the team began to wear a red hat with a navy blue B and a navy blue brim. The new look didn’t help the team win and they never
finished higher than second in their division.
After longtime owner Tom Yawkey passed away in 1976, his wife Jean oversaw control of the Boston Red Sox until her own passing 1992. The Boston Red Sox never won a single world series in the longtime ownership of the Yawkey’s.
In 2004, the team made it to another world series and this one started poorly with injured players and closely scored games. However, in their series match up again the Cardinals, the Boston Red Sox broke the “Curse of the Bambino” and brought home a world series back to Boston. A surreal touch many people considered an omen of good luck was the total lunar eclipse that occurred during game 4. The moon was colored red over Busch Stadium and the Red Sox won the game about 10 minutes before the eclipse ended.
Just to prove the “Curse of the Bambino” was just another part of Boston Red Sox history, the team went on to win the 2007 World Series against the Colorado Rockies. Ensuring the Boston Red Sox continued reputation as one of the greatest teams in MLB history.

The Enterprise of Brockton, Mass. www.enterprisenews.com Video by Dan Goldman, Enterprise staff writer Story by Bob Stern, Enterprise staff writer BOSTON — Red Sox manager Terry Francona remembers a night a year or two ago when he went out to dinner with his wife. “We had a baby sitter and got home late and we didn’t have any milk for the kids’ breakfast,” he said. “I walked in late to one of the markets in the neighborhood and the guy there was telling me I need to do this and this and this. It’s 1 o’clock in the morning, and I’m tired.” Welcome to the glass fish bowl that is the Boston Red Sox. “For the most part, people are generally very, very nice and polite,” said Francona. “Sometimes, they’re not. It does put you on guard a little bit. “Sometimes you feel a little bit like you’re in a zoo. You hear people chirping. It’s like ‘I’m right here, you know.’” It goes with the territory. The manager, along with the players, are seen almost 24/7 on TV and talked about constantly on the radio. But they know they’re as popular as their last home run, last strikeout or last good decision. They are celebrities, more so here than in many other cities. The passion of baseball — check that — the passion of Red Sox baseball, is unprecedented anywhere else in America. “It’s just like seeing movie stars,” said Dan Benoit, a fan from Bernardston. Benoit was standing outside Fenway Park at 3 in the afternoon one recent weekday just to see the players drive to the ballpark. He wasn’t …

ok something needs to fucking kick in the red sox so they can snap their damn losing streak! NOW EVERYBODY NEEDS TO START HITTING TOO!! only people who can hit the damn ball is beltre and youkilis and a little bit of pedroia. ortiz..please just hit the damn ball
Red Sox fans love to whine about how much money the Yankees spend but Boston has the 2nd highest payroll in the MLB. The Yankees fans were the most obnoxious in here at one time but now that that Boston has won a couple of World Series the Sox fans have taken annoying to another level.
I'll never liked the Red Sox. I hate Boston, I hate the people that live there, I hate the terrible New England accent, I hate Fenway, I hate the Red Sox, I hate Clam Chowder, I hate the Patriots, I hate Sam Adams Lager, I hate the Celtics, I hate the Bruins, and The Departed sucked.
Maybe ESPN will realize one day the rest of the country does not eat, sleep and breath Red Sox/Yankees.
P.S. I've been to Fenway, it's a dump. It's time to tear down that fossil of a ballpark and build a new one.
@gfscarface13 really? Because the championship banners look the same to me… and before you start talking about Boston steroid users, lets take a look at the yankees. Clemens, Giambi, Sheffield, A-rod, Pettite, Mike Stanton. And those are just a few from the recent years.. If you tried to take away a championship from a team just because a few players used steroids then you might as well just whipe out mlb history from the previous 20+ years.
Jason Bay has numbers just as good as Manny this year, and Manny was just getting worse and sabotaging the team. And NO, Manny was just going to get worse, so we couldn't make the playoffs with him still on the team. We'd be giving him away anyways, but now we have Bay who can play for 5-6 more years. You clearly don't know ANYTHING about Red Sox history if you think this is the worst day. Remember game 7 of the 2003 ALCS? Yeah, that was worse. Or Game 6 of the 1985 World Series? Or when Enos Slaughter scored from first on a double in the '46 World Series against the Cardinals? Or how about Bucky Dent's home run? Yeah. Those were dark, dark nights. But don't worry, Bay will be better for the Red Sox than Manny was. Manny had no heart. Bay has a good work ethic and the team chemistry will be much better. If you recall the 2004 World Series, the team chemistry was EVERYTHING! The Red Sox played great even when Ortiz was out for 2 months, so I don't see how we can't play great without Manny, but with Ortiz and Bay! Hansen was crap and Moss wasn't that amazing- he was our 4th outfielder. I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. Sorry.
One more thing. We're talking about a guy who WANTS to be traded. He's very, very mad at our management (the owners, the guys high up in the system, etc) and does not want to play for them. So what makes you think he's going to want to EXTEND his time here by drawing out the season to the end of October? He's going to bring us down until even the Blue Jays pass us. Bay is absolutely pumped to be with us. He was just on the PIRATES, and now he's on one of the best teams in baseball. He hasn't been on a very successful team in any of his 5 or so years with the Pirates, and is going to do absolutely everything he can for the Red Sox. He'll play his heart out, and yeah, the media will be tough to get used to. Same thing happened to JD Drew last year. Then Game 6 of the ALCS he hit the ball over the fence for what? A homerun? No, it was for a grand slam! And look at JD this year. He stepped up in Ortiz's absence, and he should again with Manny being gone. Don't worry about the Red Sox. They finished SIX games back of the Yankees in 2003 and came one stupid manager's mistake away from going to the World Series. (OBVIOUSLY Pedro shouldn't have pitched the 8th!) And then in 2004 they finished 3 games back, and went against 1,000,000 to 1 odds and won the ALCS and then the World Series. This team can do anything, so don't worry. If there's a will, there's a way.
@Bert9ton Dude, David Ortiz failed his Steroid Test. Both Manny & David were doing Steroids together in boston. Just cause someone is big it doesn’t mean they dont use Steroids LOL. Come on, thats Stupid.
Boston world series are Tainted as much as the 1989 Oakland A’s
Red Sox last legit title is still 1918.
92 Years and counting since the red sox won a LEGIT world series.
Don’t understand this commercial.
Great comercial, almost made me cry. Hail to the Red Sox!!!
Amazing!!!!
Yes I think it is the worst, not signing a black player til 1945.
Edit: Let me add, that just how it was back then.. You cant blame the red sox. But being the last Major league team to sign a black player is kinda bad in my opinion.
yes im sure there are still racist now.. but the red sox have more than made up their mistakes by signing other players not just americans.
Very nice. I happened to be a Mets fan living in Boston in '86. I will always remember Mookie Wilson's hit and Buckner's error. What I was wondering, and maybe this should be posted as a question is whether Buckner really shouldn't be blamed. Mookie was the fastest player on the Mets and I think Buckner took his eye off the ball because the pitcher (whose name I can't remember) hadn't run quickly enough to cover first or he ran just slow enough to cause Buckner to screw up the play.
I have my reasons but I became a Sox fan in 2002/2003, I didn't leave the Mets as much as they left me.
@gfscarface13 umm how about A- ROID last year. i guess that means the yankees title was tainted too right??
I was so happy last night when Arod hit that home run,And shut up those arrogrant fans,They went to to fenway park, and harassed Arod all weekend,Even the sportcasters said it was terrible how they treated him,,But you see,Boston fans think that, when they scream, and shout, and just get down right rude, that the yankees will get scared and nervous, instead the yankees feed on it,,So on the top of the 9th Arod not only wipped the smirk off PapleBomb's face,,He shut those arrogrant fans up for the 1st time all weekend!! It was priceless! And he laughed his @ss off in the locker room!!!
Boston Sux
SUCK+STEROIDS=THE YANKEES GO SOX!!!
The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first pro baseball team, but their name was eventually shortened to Reds. Around 1910 or so the new owner of the Boston Americans changed the name of the team to "Red Sox" in reference to the old Cincinnati name. The Atlanta Braves, as they are known today, originally played in Boston before the Red Sox and the American League were founded, and they played at Braves Field in Boston, which was across the street from Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds, the home of the Red Sox before Fenway Park. The Sox also played a few World Series games in the 1910s at Braves Field, which had a larger capacity than Fenway. The Braves eventually relocated to Milwaukee, then to Atlanta.
Lol..anybody who takes this question seriously is retarded. Im pretty sure hes not meaning this as a serious question. And if you are, lol, but anyway they cant be the ugliest team in history with Jacoby Ellsbury, no home…im not gay but hes a good looking man
